Raquy and the Cavemen will be playing Red Light - Friday, it is. Go see them! It's Eastern music with a strong and brutal twist. Some of their songs actually piss me off, just because they're that freaking great.

Once you've seen them, you will, as I did, suddenly and vitally require all their albums.
They always talk up the drums, which are spectacular, no question, but they (for some reason) usually fail to strongly-enough make a big deal out of Raquy's skill with the Iranian kamanche - it's a rare instrument for anyone to be playing at all - especially a white chick - and she does it *real* damgud. Plus, they're all fine, like wine, only more dangerous.

Wed, May 2, 2007 - 10:01 PMDang! I already signed up for hoopla's Jazz Guitar thing and the 5 spot. Maybe after if I'm not too drunk, it'd be my third venue of the night though....you do the math, seems unlikely.

Thu, May 3, 2007 - 6:03 AMHere are some YouTube vids that will give you chills
www.youtube.com/watch
Raquy Danziger is one of the most popular performers, teachers and
composers of Middle Eastern Drumming today. Audiences worldwide are
not only surprised by this young woman from America, but captivated
by her virtuosity, profound musicality and the passion she brings to
performances. Her varied repertoire includes traditional Middle
Eastern music as well as her own compositions.
www.youtube.com/watch
The highlight of her career was in March 2005 when Raquy was invited
by the most famous drummer in Egypt, Saiid El Artist to perform as a
soloist with his troupe. www.youtube.com/watch
A classically trained pianist, Raquy first discovered hand drumming
during her travels in Varanase, India where she immersed herself in
the study of Indian rhythmic cycles. Later, in Israel, Raquy was
drawn to the dumbek (otherwise known as tabla) and the groove of
Middle Eastern music. www.youtube.com/watch

Re: Raquy and the Cavemen
Sat, May 5, 2007 - 2:43 PMYou'll get to see them when they come back next time, I guess. It was fun having them; whenever Brooklyn kids come down south the first time they're always surprised at the southern mode. They never saw a World Farmer's Market before, it seems.
Excellent people, one and all. One thing I wasn't prepared for is how much their rik player looks *exactly like Grady Cousins*. Dude *smokes* that rik, too. Dam! If you could have a Lyron for every musical ensemble, there wouldn't be so much peevish sorrow in this world. If you could have a Yotam in ever social unit, there wouldn't be so little music.
I was gratified; my favorite song by them is "Caravan" and that's the one Sarai danced to. She scared some folks; Raquy seemed totally spooked by it afterward. Muahahaaaa! "I didn't know! So intense!" Fortunately, AADers Ziah and Oracle were there in force with students and chops to make everybody feel safe and happy again afterwards.
Ululations all around. *Great* stuff, everbuddy. Truly special couple of nights for moi. Fun to hear Ziah serving up a Loki-style annoyed rant before the show: see?!?!?! *It's not just me*, folks: there's a bunch of us out there talking about you behind your back. If you really want to bitch about culture in this town, you at least have to go see R&theC-men next time they play A town. Otherwise, it's all you.
